Mumbai: The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has won all three Graduate constituencies in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, while the ruling Mahayuti alliance secured both Teacher constituencies. The results were declared after counting that continued for more than 40 hours in some seats.
The elections were held on October 23 across five constituencies: Pune Graduates, Nagpur Graduates, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates, Pune Teachers and Amravati Teachers.
The MVA’s victories included Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari retaining the Nagpur Graduates’ seat, while the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) won the Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Graduates’ constituencies.
On the Mahayuti side, the BJP won the Pune Teachers’ constituency, while Shiv Sena candidate Kiran Sarnaik secured victory in Amravati.
NCP (SP) Wins Two Graduate Seats, Congress Retains Nagpur
In Pune, NCP (SP) candidate Harshada Deshmukh-Jadhav defeated BJP nominee Smita Jadhav. Harshada secured 1,13,840 votes against Smita’s 1,03,912 votes.
In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, NCP (SP) candidate Pratapsinh Patil defeated sitting MLC Satish Chavan of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction, ending his run in the constituency.
Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari retained the Nagpur Graduates’ seat after a closely fought contest against BJP candidate Sudhakar Kohale. Wanjari won by 3,271 votes, securing 67,231 votes against Kohale’s 63,960.
The Nagpur result drew attention because the constituency is considered a BJP stronghold and is part of the political base of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
BJP and Shiv Sena Win Teacher Constituencies
The Mahayuti alliance secured both Teacher constituencies.
In Pune, BJP candidate Kaustubh Gawade defeated Shiv Sena-backed independent candidate Sachin Sanap and sitting Congress MLC Jayant Asgaonkar. Gawade received 23,117 votes, while Sanap secured 16,347 votes.
In Amravati, Shiv Sena candidate Kiran Sarnaik won the Teachers’ constituency with 16,663 votes, crossing the winning quota of 16,134. Congress candidate Aditi Pohre finished second, while Shiv Sena rebel Shrikant Deshpande was also in the contest.
Counting Delays Keep Results in Focus
The counting process extended beyond 40 hours in some constituencies as officials counted ballot papers and transferred preference votes. The use of preferential voting meant that candidates did not always secure victory through first-preference votes alone.
Polling across the five constituencies recorded a voter turnout of 72.96 per cent, according to reported election figures.
The results gave the opposition MVA all three Graduate seats, while the BJP and Shiv Sena secured one Teacher seat each for the ruling Mahayuti alliance.
