Major Change in OCI Rules: NRIs Can Now Apply Upon Arrival in India

New Delhi: The Indian government has made significant changes to the rules related to the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, providing significant relief to millions of NRIs living in India and abroad, especially the Punjabi community. Under the new rules, the requirement for NRIs to stay in India for six months to obtain an OCI card has been removed.

6-month requirement abolished, immediate application possible

According to the government’s latest decision, any NRI can now apply for an OCI card upon arrival in India. Previously, a minimum stay of six months in India was required. However, a valid address proof in India will be required for the application.

    Stricter Rules for Foreign Spouses

The government has tightened the rules for spouses of foreign origin. They will now have to declare that they are living with their Indian spouses every time they renew their passports. In the event of a divorce, their OCI card will automatically be revoked, and they will be permitted to stay in India only under visa rules.

    New Requirements for Children’s Documents

For children of Indian origin born abroad, OCI cards will now require their birth certificates to be attested by the government of the respective country. Previously, simply providing a copy was sufficient.

    Digital Entry System Implemented

The government has also digitalized the travel process for NRIs. There will no longer be a need to fill out a form on the flight before arriving in India. Instead, they will need to generate a digital e-arrival card by entering the information on the ‘Su-Swagatam’ app. This system has been implemented from April 1.

    Fine for Delayed Passport Updates

According to the new rules, if an OCI cardholder fails to update their information within three months of obtaining a new passport, they will be fined up to $25 (approximately Rs. 2,100).

    NRIs to get major benefits

These changes will make it easier for NRIs to travel to and live in India. OCI cardholders can visit India without a visa, purchase property, and enjoy banking and investment benefits.

This government move is being considered a major relief for the NRI community and a significant improvement in simplifying the process.
