Mumbai: An investigation by the police and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Bhum taluka of Dharashiv district, Maharashtra, has uncovered a major milk adulteration racket. The case has raised serious questions about food safety in the state.
More than 23 million liters of milk suspected
Sales registers seized during the investigation revealed that approximately 2.3 million liters of synthetic milk was produced using approximately 2.30 lakh kilograms of substandard milk powder over the past six months. Officials estimate that, based on a 10 percent adulteration rate, over 23 million liters of adulterated milk may have been supplied to various parts of Maharashtra.
Milk prepared with detergents and chemicals
According to police, the accused mixed detergent powder, palm oil, and low-quality chemicals into the fake milk to make it look like real milk and maintain its fat content. Investigations revealed that 10 liters of synthetic milk was mixed for every 100 liters of pure milk.
Serious health hazard
Experts say that continued consumption of milk adulterated with such chemicals can cause serious damage to the liver, kidneys, and digestive system. The risk is even greater for children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
Seven accused absconding, SIT investigating
Police have registered a case against seven people in this matter, but all the accused are still absconding. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to search for them. During the raid, 61 bags of adulterated milk powder were recovered. The investigation has also revealed the role of several milk collection centers, and the police are investigating the entire network.
