Major fire breaks out in Jalandhar factory, one person injured

Jalandhar: A sudden fire broke out at the Modi Mattress Factory on Basti Pirdar Road on Wednesday morning. Around 30 employees were present in the factory at the time of the fire, who escaped in time and saved their lives.

Fire spread rapidly due to chemicals

People saw smoke rising from the factory around 9 a.m. and alerted the fire brigade. Due to the presence of chemicals and flammable materials inside the factory, the fire spread rapidly. The flames reached the surrounding residential area, causing panic among the people.

A lantern also collapsed during the incident. One person was injured after slipping and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The cause of the fire is not yet clear. Initially, a short circuit is suspected.

8-10 fire brigade vehicles on the scene

According to ADFO Maninder Singh, the fire brigade received a call about the fire around 9:15 a.m. Immediately, the team arrived at the scene and began extinguishing the fire. Around 8 to 10 fire tenders arrived.

According to the fire department, the fire was approximately 95% contained. The collapse of the factory shed hampered rescue and relief operations.

Questions about the factory in a residential area

Local residents have demanded that the factory be relocated outside the residential area. They allege that they were initially told to move the factory and use the site as a warehouse, but mattress manufacturing operations are still ongoing.

Local residents also claim that the factory contained a large number of commercial LPG cylinders. Following the fire, residents have demanded the administration review security measures and take action against such factories operating in residential areas.
