A major tragedy struck Balkeshwar Ghat in Agra on Tuesday morning. Six young men and women, along with a teenager, drowned after jumping into the Yamuna River to take a dip amidst the scorching heat. Panic ensued at the ghat as onlookers witnessed the entire group drowning simultaneously.
A large crowd of people quickly gathered at the scene. Residents immediately alerted the police, following which the local station police and a relief team arrived at the spot.
Five were rescued by the police
The police and local divers immediately launched rescue operations. After an arduous effort, five of the young men and women were pulled out of the Yamuna. As three of them were in critical condition, they were rushed to the emergency ward of S.N. Hospital for treatment, where two young men and one young woman subsequently passed away.
Meanwhile, upon receiving news of the incident, the family members also arrived at the scene; they were inconsolable and overwhelmed with grief. Separately, after a two-hour search in the Yamuna, the body of the teenager was also recovered. The sight of the teenager’s body triggered an outburst of wailing and anguish among the family members.
DCP City Syed Ali Abbas stated that the group had come to bathe in the Yamuna and included 19-year-old Mahak (daughter of Kalicharan), 22-year-old Kanha (son of Rinku Singh), 20-year-old Anshu (daughter of Kalicharan)—all residents of Kunjanpur under the Sadabad police station area—along with 17-year-old Riya (daughter of Manoj) and 11-year-old Vicky (son of Rakesh). The DCP confirmed that Mahak, Riya, Kanha, Kajal, and Anshu were successfully pulled out of the Yamuna River. All of them were sent to the emergency ward of S.N. Hospital for treatment, where Kanha, Mahak, and Riya died while undergoing medical care. Additionally, Vicky’s body was also recovered from the Yamuna.
