Suvendu Adhikari orders fresh probe into Mamata Banerjee’s 2021 Nandigram injury

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday announced a fresh inquiry into Mamata Banerjee’s 2021 Nandigram election campaign injury, alleging that the former Chief Minister had misrepresented the severity of her injuries.

Adhikari claimed that a medical report from the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience showed no evidence of a fracture or dislocation and said the state government would investigate the matter.

    Adhikari alleges injury was faked

Speaking at a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna, Adhikari alleged that Banerjee had “faked” her leg injury during the 2021 Assembly election campaign in Nandigram.

“We have the medical report which stated that there was no evidence of fracture or dislocation. We will initiate an investigation into the matter,” Adhikari said, while displaying what he identified as Banerjee’s medical report issued by the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience.

He said he would provide more details after the Model Code of Conduct is lifted following October 9.

What happened during 2021 Nandigram campaign

Banerjee, who was Chief Minister at the time, sustained injuries to her left leg and waist in the Reyapara area of Birulia in Nandigram on March 10, 2021, during her election campaign.

She had initially said that unidentified people had pushed her against the open door of her vehicle amid a crowd, causing the door to hit her left leg.

In a subsequent video message from hospital, Banerjee said that a large crowd had pressed against her vehicle while she was greeting supporters, resulting in the injury.

Available reports from the time state that she was diagnosed with severe bone and ligament injuries to her left ankle and foot, along with bruising and pain in her right shoulder, forearm, neck and waist. She was admitted to SSKM Hospital and discharged on March 12 with her left foot in a cast.

Fresh probe comes ahead of Nandigram bypoll

The announcement comes ahead of the Nandigram by-election scheduled for October 6, with counting of votes due on October 9.

Adhikari said he would disclose further details concerning his claims after the Model Code of Conduct is lifted.

The allegation revisits one of the most prominent incidents of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election campaign, when Banerjee was campaigning in Nandigram and later continued her campaign in a wheelchair.
