Mamata Banerjee Alleges Stones Hurled at Car in Bengal, Says ‘We Could Have All Been Killed’

Kolkata: Former West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday alleged that stones were hurled at her car during a protest in North 24 Parganas’ Bijpur, claiming that she and others in the vehicle “could have been killed”.

Banerjee was travelling to the residence of a deceased TMC worker when protesters gathered around her vehicle and raised slogans, including “chor” (thief). Protesters also allegedly smeared mud on her car.

Mamata Alleges Stones, Shoes Thrown at Car

Banerjee alleged that large stones were hurled at her vehicle in front of police personnel and questioned the security arrangements during her visit.

“My car has been attacked with stones, shoes and mud. This is nothing but conspiracy. I had informed the police that I will be coming; despite that, the police did not take any security measures,” Banerjee said.

She further alleged that the attack was severe enough to have caused serious injuries had the car windows been open.

“Large stones were hurled at my car by anti-social elements, right in front of the police. The attack on the vehicle was so severe that if the windows had been open, my head would have been split open. We could have all been killed,” she alleged.

Banerjee also accused the police of failing to provide adequate protection and alleged that the state was being controlled by “goons”.

Protesters Raise ‘Chor’ Slogans

The incident took place as Banerjee was visiting the family of a deceased TMC worker in Bijpur. A group of protesters surrounded her vehicle and raised slogans against her, including “chor”.

According to reports, protesters alleged that Banerjee had come to disturb the area and objected to her visit.

The deceased TMC worker had reportedly fallen ill while in the custody of Halisahar police.

The confrontation comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress continuing to face opposition protests and criticism following the state’s recent political upheaval.

The allegations of stone-pelting and the circumstances surrounding the protest are likely to remain a political flashpoint, with Banerjee questioning the police response during the incident.
