Mamata Banerjee’s former aide and Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Sushmita Dev resigns

The ongoing internal crisis within the Trinamool Congress appears to be deepening further. Party Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has dealt another major blow to the Mamata Banerjee camp by resigning from her post. Reports of rebellion within the party had been surfacing consistently over the past few days, and Sushmita Dev’s resignation has now exacerbated the crisis.

Before this, senior Trinamool leader and long-time party Chief Whip in the Rajya Sabha, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, had also left the party. These successive resignations clearly indicate that discontent within the Trinamool Congress is rising rapidly.

Why did Sushmita Dev resign?
Sushmita Dev, a former Lok Sabha MP from Silchar, Assam, resigned from her Rajya Sabha membership on Wednesday. She wrote to Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan, requesting that her resignation be accepted with immediate effect. Although she has not publicly disclosed the detailed reasons for her resignation, it is being viewed in the context of the growing rebellion within the Trinamool Congress.

Sushmita Dev was previously with the Congress party. She left Congress after losing the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021. After joining the party, she was appointed as a national spokesperson and subsequently sent to the Rajya Sabha. Consequently, her sudden resignation is considered a political setback for Mamata Banerjee.

Is this another major blow following Sukhendu Sekhar Roy’s resignation?
Sushmita Dev’s resignation comes shortly after senior Trinamool leader Sukhendu Sekhar Roy also resigned from the Rajya Sabha. In his letter to Mamata Banerjee, he had leveled serious allegations against the party, citing corruption, crimes against women, and a breakdown of law and order.

In his letter, Roy stated that the people of Bengal had rejected the party’s corruption and anarchy. He also claimed that the BJP government is now working towards the development of Bengal. His statement had sparked a major controversy in Bengal politics, and Sushmita Dev’s resignation has now further intensified that controversy.
