Kolkata: A man was arrested from the Garden Reach area of Kolkata for allegedly sending an email to police threatening a suicide bomb attack on West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari “with the help of terror outfit Al Qaeda,” a senior officer said on Saturday.

The accused, identified as 27-year-old Hasnain Iqbal, was arrested on Friday night following a joint operation by the cyber cell and the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police.

Threat Email Received by Bhowanipore Police Station

Additional CP-IV of Kolkata Police V Solomon Nesakumar said the threatening email was received at Bhowanipore police station around 10:15 am on May 14.

The email reportedly claimed that a suicide attack would be carried out on Adhikari with the help of Al Qaeda.

“The email was sent using the identity of a woman. After receiving the complaint, an investigation was immediately initiated by the cyber wing and STF,” Nesakumar told reporters.

Cyber Probe Traces Email to Garden Reach Resident

During investigation, officials traced the email trail to Hasnain Iqbal, a resident of Golam Abbas Lane in Garden Reach.

Police said the accused later admitted to sending the email during interrogation.

Preliminary findings suggest that the woman whose identity was used in the email was known to the accused, and investigators believe the intention was to harass or implicate her and her family.

Accused Linked to Previous Email Cases, Say Police

Investigators also found that Iqbal had allegedly sent similar emails earlier to several government institutions, including the Election Commission.

Police officials added that the accused had strong technical knowledge and was skilled in manipulating IP addresses and digital tools to conceal his identity while sending such messages.

Further investigation is currently underway to determine the full extent of his activities.
