BJP Leader Writes to Punjab DGP, Demands Ban on Mankirt Aulakh’s Song “Asla”

Even though Punjab has banned songs that promote gun culture, such content continues to be released. The latest controversy is around Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh’s new song “Asla”, which shows weapons in its lyrics and visuals.

Arvind Sharma, co-convenor of the BJP Punjab Trade Cell, has raised strong objections to the song. He has written a letter to Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, calling the song an incitement to violence and demanding that it be banned and removed from YouTube and other digital platforms.

Song Released on February 6

The song “Asla,” featuring Mankirt Aulakh and Zeher Vibe, was released on February 6 on YouTube and other digital platforms. Mankirt Aulakh has also been touring Punjab for the last 15 days to promote the song.

Soon after its release, the song sparked controversy as its lyrics and video openly show weapons, which critics say promote violence and criminal behaviour.

Key Points Raised in Complaint to DGP

1.Songs Like These Mislead Youth

In his complaint, Arvind Sharma said Punjab is already facing serious problems like drug addiction, gang violence, and illegal weapons. He claimed that songs like “Asla” push young people towards crime and threaten law and order.

2. Gun Culture Songs Still Being Released

Sharma said that despite a ban, many songs promoting gun culture continue to be released. He urged the government and police to issue strict guidelines to digital platforms to stop such content in the future.

3. Court Orders Ignored

The complaint also referred to rulings by the Supreme Court and the Punjab and Haryana High Court, stating that public peace cannot be disturbed in the name of freedom of expression. Sharma added that while Punjab Police is cancelling gun licences to improve safety, such songs weaken those efforts.
