FIFA World Cup 2026 Final: Cucurella Vows Spain Retirement, Promises Coach Luis de la Fuente Tattoo if La Roja Win Title

New York: Spain defender Marc Cucurella has made two surprising promises ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Argentina he will retire from international football and get a tattoo of Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente if La Roja lift the trophy.

The 27-year-old left-back, who has played a crucial role in Spain’s run to the final, said winning both the UEFA European Championship and FIFA World Cup would be the ultimate achievement and leave him with nothing more to prove at the international level.

Cucurella promises retirement after World Cup triumph

Cucurella said that if Spain defeat Argentina and become world champions, he would inform coach Luis de la Fuente that he no longer wants to be considered for national team selection.

The defender has featured in every minute of Spain’s seven matches at the tournament, helping the team reach the final while conceding only one goal.

Having already won Euro 2024 with Spain, Cucurella believes a World Cup title would be the perfect way to end his international career.

Apart from his retirement pledge, Cucurella also made another unusual promise he said he would get a tattoo of Luis de la Fuente’s face on his bicep if Spain win the World Cup.

The bold statement adds to Cucurella’s reputation for making eye-catching promises. Earlier, he had joked that he would rather shave his head than play for Real Madrid, though he eventually joined the club in June this year.

Spain aim for second World Cup crown

Spain will face defending finalists Argentina in the World Cup final with the aim of winning their second-ever FIFA World Cup title.

A victory would complete a remarkable period for Spain, who won the European Championship in 2024 and are now chasing football’s biggest prize.

For Cucurella, the final could mark the biggest achievement of his career and, if his promise stands, the beginning of his farewell from international football.
