Massive Gas Tanker Explosion on A1 Highway Sparks Chaos, Heroes Evacuate Area

Italy: Dozens of motorists returning home for the Christmas holidays witnessed the horrific sight of a gas tanker explosion on the A1 highway. After the tanker collided with a truck carrying cars, debris scattered across the highway and surrounding fields. Fortunately, three firefighters on leave evacuated the area in time and prevented any casualties. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Highway closed and traffic jam
Following the explosion, authorities closed the highway in both directions, causing a traffic jam of approximately ten kilometers from Caianello to Capua. Traffic was later rerouted through a service station. Employees there say they were almost at a loss for words until the fire and police arrived.

Investigation and Damage Assessment
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Statements were taken from both drivers, and the vehicles are being safety checked. Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion damaged two service stations, nearby vehicles, and some homes. Videos of the fire on social media attracted attention, with many comparing it to a nuclear explosion. Experts say it could be a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion) condition, which is common in tanker fires.
