Mauritius PM calls on President Murmu, concludes State Visit to India

New Delhi: Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, marking the conclusion of his State Visit to India from September 9 to 16.

The two leaders discussed the unique and deep-rooted ties between India and Mauritius, anchored in shared history, language, culture, and values.

Welcoming the Mauritian leader, President Murmu said Mauritius holds a special place in India’s “Neighbourhood First Policy”, “MAHASAGAR Vision”, and commitment to the Global South.

‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership’

The President expressed satisfaction over the steady growth of bilateral cooperation, reflected in the recent elevation of ties to an “Enhanced Strategic Partnership.”

According to a statement from the President’s Secretariat:
“The President was happy to note that India is supporting the developmental priorities of the Government of Mauritius and expressed confidence that the new Special Economic Package will be able to meet the needs of the government and people of Mauritius. She said that the projects, including hospitals, roads, port development, defence procurement and joint surveillance, will enhance infrastructure and will have a positive impact on the lives of people in the coming years. She added that bilateral cooperation is now also expanding in new areas, including digital technologies and the space sector.”

The President also expressed confidence that under Prime Minister Ramgoolam’s leadership, India-Mauritius ties will further deepen.

Meetings with Indian Leaders

Earlier, PM Ramgoolam met Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan at the Vice President’s Enclave, where discussions focused on boosting trade, economic cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.

On September 11, he also held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reviewing all aspects of bilateral cooperation.

Cultural and Spiritual Visits

During his eight-day stay, Prime Minister Ramgoolam and his wife Veena Ramgoolam visited several spiritual and cultural sites:

• Tirumala Temple, Tirupati – offered prayers with his wife before arriving in Delhi.
• Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, Ayodhya (Sept 12) – became the second foreign Head of State, after Bhutan’s PM, to offer prayers before Ram Lalla, performing aarti and observing temple construction.
• Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi – accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, followed by witnessing the Ganga Aarti on Sept 11.
• Rajghat & Sadaiv Atal, New Delhi – paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Sharing images of the Varanasi visit, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X:
“PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius, offered prayers at the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Dham in Varanasi. A visit reflecting the deep cultural and civilizational bonds that unite India and Mauritius.”

Conclusion of State Visit

The State Visit, covering Mumbai, Varanasi, Ayodhya, Tirupati, and New Delhi, showcased the cultural, spiritual, and strategic dimensions of India-Mauritius relations, further cementing the historic bonds between the two nations.
