Meth tablets valued at Rs 39 crore seized in Assam; three arrested

Cachar: Highly addictive methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs 39 crore were seized, and three drug peddlers were arrested by law enforcement agencies in Assam’s Cachar district, officials said on Wednesday.

Joint Operation Leads to Major Drug Seizure

A defence spokesperson said that the Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), launched the operation based on specific inputs regarding drug trafficking in Cachar district. During the raid, three individuals — all residents of Tripura — were caught transporting 1.30 lakh methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 39 crore along National Highway-306 late Tuesday night. Two Tata trucks and two mobile phones in their possession were also seized.

Significant Milestone in Anti-Drug Efforts

An official statement highlighted that Assam Rifles has been at the forefront of anti-drug operations in the region, conducting regular drives to dismantle narcotics networks. The seizure marks a major step in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking.

Cross-Border Smuggling Route Identified

Officials suspect the methamphetamine tablets, also called Yaba or party tablets, were smuggled from Myanmar into southern Assam through Mizoram before being transported elsewhere in India or abroad. Mizoram shares long porous borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, and Myanmar’s Chin state is a major hub for drugs and other contraband entering northeastern India.
