Temascalcingo, Mexico: At least nine people were killed and 24 others injured after fireworks exploded in the community of Santa María Canchesdá in Mexico’s State of Mexico during celebrations linked to the local patronal festival, authorities said.
The explosion took place at around 9 pm on Saturday, September 5, near the Santa María Canchesdá church in the municipality of Temascalcingo. Fireworks had been stored in a room next to the church when the blast occurred.
Roof Collapses After Fireworks Explosion
According to the State of Mexico’s Civil Protection authorities, the explosion caused the roof/slab of the room where the fireworks were stored to collapse, trapping and crushing people who were in the area.
Eight people died at the scene, while another person later succumbed to injuries at the General Hospital of Atlacomulco, taking the death toll to nine. A total of 24 people were reported injured.
The incident occurred as residents gathered for the celebrations in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Luz (Our Lady of Light). Reports said more people than usual were present in the area because of the patronal festivities.
Emergency Teams Rush to Scene
Following the blast, emergency teams from the State of Mexico and neighbouring municipalities were deployed to the area.
The response involved Civil Protection units, firefighters, the State Emergency Service (SUEM), the National Emergency Commission and state police. Rescue teams also worked to remove debris and assist people trapped after the collapse.
Some injured people were taken to the General Hospital of Atlacomulco. A list circulating locally included several minors among those transported for treatment, although authorities cautioned against relying on unverified information circulating on social media.
