Water Contamination in Mhow: 22 Fall Ill, Many Hospitalised

A major water contamination scare has emerged in Mhow, a town in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh, where at least 22 residents have fallen ill after consuming allegedly polluted drinking water. Symptoms reported include vomiting and jaundice-like conditions, raising fears of waterborne health risks in the area. Health officials and local authorities have swung into action following reports of illness from several localities.

Clusters of Illness in Patti Bazaar and Chander Marg Areas

The cases primarily stem from the Patti Bazaar, Chander Marg, and Moti Mahal areas of Mhow, where residents complained of muddy, foul-smelling water coming through household taps. Many affected individuals reported falling sick shortly after drinking this water. Children and young adults form a significant portion of those affected, with some missing crucial academic activities due to illness.

    Hospital Admissions and Home Treatment

Of the 22 people who fell ill, nine have been admitted to local hospitals for closer monitoring and medical care, while others are recuperating at home under supervision. Health officials have indicated that the number of affected individuals may rise as additional reports continue to emerge from surrounding localities.

    Administrative Response and Health Efforts

Following the outbreak, Indore Collector Shivam Verma reached Mhow late on Thursday night to oversee the situation, visit patients, and coordinate a response with health officials. Under the direction of the Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr Madhav Hasani, teams from the health department were deployed early Friday to provide medical assistance and conduct initial surveys in the affected neighbourhoods.

Water Quality Checks and Sanitation Measures

Authorities have instructed the Mhow Cantonment Board to conduct immediate quality tests of the water supply in the affected areas. Officials are also focusing on maintaining sanitation and preventing further contamination. Door-to-door health surveys have been launched to identify residents showing symptoms and ensure timely treatment.

    Local Concerns Over Long-Standing Issues

Residents have alleged that they had previously reported concerns about water quality, including issues such as pipes passing through drains or mixing with sewage, but feel these concerns were not addressed promptly. The current incident follows a recent waterborne disease outbreak in nearby Indore, which claimed multiple lives and heightened public awareness of drinking water safety challenges in the region.

    Health Advisory and Monitoring

Health authorities have urged residents to report any new symptoms immediately and are closely monitoring the situation. Water samples have been collected for detailed laboratory analysis to confirm the contamination source and determine appropriate remedial measures. Officials maintain that the situation is being managed and emphasise the importance of community cooperation during the ongoing assessment and response.
