New Delhi, August 26: India’s star weightlifter and Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu made a brilliant comeback in the Commonwealth Championships to win the gold medal and also set new records.
Chanu won the gold medal in the women’s 48 kg category by lifting a total of 193 kg (84 kg in snatch and 109 kg in clean and jerk). This performance is a new record in the Commonwealth Championships – in all three – snatch, clean and jerk and total weight.

Great comeback after injury
This was Mirabai’s return to international competition after a break of about a year and injury. However, she managed to succeed in only three of the six attempts, which showed her somewhat rusty state.
Her first snatch attempt was of 84 kg in which she failed due to knee pain, but in the second attempt she successfully lifted the same weight. She failed to lift 89 kg in the third attempt.
Competition was with herself
Since she did not face any major challenge in the match, Mirabai was seen competing with herself. She started with 105 kg in clean and jerk, then lifted 109 kg but could not lift 113 kg in the last attempt.
Other medalists:
Silver: Irene Henry of Malaysia (Total 161 kg – Snatch 73 kg, Clean and Jerk 88 kg)
Bronze: Nicole Roberts of Wales (Total 150 kg – Snatch 70 kg, Clean and Jerk 80 kg)
This match was also Mirabai’s return to the 48 kg category, in which she had previously won the world title and two Commonwealth Games medals. She entered this weight category for the first time since 2018.
India also won gold in the junior category
India’s Soumya Dalvi also won the gold medal in the junior category, which made this competition even more special for India.
