Mirzapur Lawyer Shot Dead During Morning Walk, Attackers Flee

A senior lawyer was shot dead in Mirzapur at 7.15 am on Saturday while on a morning walk. Two attackers came on a bike. He stopped them on the way and shot them with a pistol in the chest. The lawyer, covered in blood, fell to the ground. After committing the crime, the accused fled from the spot. The entire incident was recorded on CCTV.

The lawyer’s name is Rajiv Singh (45). His wife is the village head. While fleeing after the incident, the attackers’ bike stopped. When people ran to catch them, they pointed a pistol. Frightened, the people retreated. The incident took place in Katwaru Ka Pura locality of Katra Kotwali area, 2 km from the district headquarters.

SP Aparna Rajat Kaushik said:

Talk of murder has emerged in an election rivalry. The deceased, Rajiv Singh’s wife, is the village head. The attacker has been identified. He has also contested the panchayat election in the lawyer’s village. Seven months ago, the attacker had also assaulted the lawyer. Teams have been formed for the arrest.

In the one-minute CCTV, it can be seen that the attackers were on a bike. The accused wearing a blue shirt was driving the bike. The attacker sitting behind, wearing white pants and a shirt, had a towel hanging around his neck. Seeing the lawyer, the attacker gets down with a gun in his hand. He stops and fires. After the incident, the attacker and his accomplice tried to escape, but the bike did not start.
The accomplice driving the bike kicked it 15-16 times, but nothing happened. The attacker pushed him to the back and tried to start the bike himself. When people ran to catch the attackers, they threatened them with the gun. The attacker kicked and started the bike. Then both escaped from the spot.

The lawyer’s wife is the village head; the family lived in the city. Originally hailing from Devri village of Vindhyachal police station, Rajiv Singh alias Rinku Katra lived in the Kotwali area. In 2011, he bought land here and built a house. He was living here due to the children’s education. He used to go to and from the court from here. His wife, Pratibha Singh (40), is the village head. Because of this, he frequently had to visit the village. They have 2 sons, Om (18) and Sarthak (12).

SP Aparna Rajat said – Rajiv had left home in the morning for a walk. He had reached just a short distance from home when bike-riding assailants murdered him and fled. People nearby took the injured lawyer to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The police sent the body for post-mortem and have started the investigation.

The accused has also contested the Panchayat chief election. The SSP informed that the identity of the main accused has been established. The main accused, Rajendra Sonkar, is also from the lawyer’s village, Devari. He has contested the Panchayat chief election. He had an electoral rivalry with Rajiv Singh’s wife, Pratibha Singh. However, the identity of the other accused has not been established yet.

According to the police, Rajendra Sonkar also lives in a rented house in Katwaru Ka Pura. He had been doing recce of Rajiv’s house for the last several months. He already knew what time Rajiv left home every day for a morning walk. He committed the crime by plotting the whole conspiracy.

Even 7 months ago, the pistol was taunted
Neighbours said that Rajendra Sonkar had attacked Rajiv Singh by stopping him in the middle of the road about 7 months ago. He took out a pistol from the trunk of the bike and pointed it at Rajiv Singh and assaulted him. Rajiv Singh had also filed a complaint in this case at Katra Kotwali, but no action was taken by the police in time.
