Aizawl/Imphal: The bodies of three officials of Doordarshan and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) were to be handed over to their families on Friday after they were killed when their car plunged into a deep gorge near Sataek village in Mizoram, officials said.
The accident took place on Thursday night, when the vehicle carrying the four officials fell into a gorge around 30 km south of Aizawl.
The deceased have been identified as Nampibou Marinmai, Director (News) of Aizawl Doordarshan Kendra; Engam Pame, Additional Director General of the Press Information Bureau (PIB); and H. Lianvela, a multi-tasking staff member of the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) field office in Mizoram.
The vehicle’s driver, Gojendro Dey, who is associated with the Aizawl CBC, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH) at Falkawn near Aizawl.
Three Officials Killed in Mizoram Road Accident
According to officials, the four were returning to Aizawl after planting a tree at Sialsuk village in memory of Pame’s brother, who had died in an accident.
The vehicle reportedly veered off the road after the driver suddenly experienced uneasiness and was unable to move his limbs or open his eyes, following which the car plunged into the deep gorge.
The bodies of the three officials were brought to ZMCH on Thursday night for postmortem examination, which was scheduled for Friday.
After the autopsy, the bodies of Nampibou Marinmai and Engam Pame were to be sent to their respective hometowns in Manipur.
Manipur, Mizoram CMs Condole Deaths
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh separately expressed condolences over the deaths of the three officials.
Lalduhoma said he was deeply saddened by the “tragic and untimely” deaths of Pame, Marinmai and Lianvela and conveyed his condolences to their families.
The Manipur Chief Minister’s Office said that Nampibou Marinmai and Engam Pame were residents of Tamenglong district in Manipur and expressed condolences to their bereaved families.
Leaders of the Mizoram Journalists’ Association (MJA) also visited ZMCH on Thursday night to pay homage and offer condolences to the deceased officials.
