Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed the recently announced India‑US interim trade agreement framework, describing it as a major step in strengthening economic ties between New Delhi and Washington. Modi publicly thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for his personal commitment to bolstering robust bilateral relations, underlining the trust and dynamism at the heart of the partnership.
In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said the agreement heralds “great news for India and the USA” and reflects “the growing depth, trust and dynamism of our partnership.” Modi emphasized that this framework builds on the ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies.
The interim framework, jointly announced by both countries, paves the way for expanded market access and economic cooperation. It includes provisions that will deepen trade, lower certain tariffs and strengthen supply chains, creating new opportunities in key sectors.
Among the potential benefits, the agreement is expected to bolster India’s flagship Make in India initiative by opening doors for Indian businesses, exporters, and startups in the expansive U.S. market. Modi highlighted that the pact would create large‑scale employment opportunities for women and young people across the country.
Modi noted that the interim trade framework will support farmers, entrepreneurs, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), startup innovators and fishermen by reducing barriers and enhancing market access. He said the pact will unlock fresh opportunities for Indian workers and producers.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also emphasized that the agreement could open up access to the $30 trillion U.S. market for Indian exporters, particularly benefitting MSMEs, farmers and fishermen.
Under the framework, the United States has agreed to reduce reciprocal tariffs on Indian products, including textiles, leather, organic chemicals, and other goods a move expected to enhance the competitiveness of Indian exports. India, in turn, will lower or eliminate duties on a broad set of U.S. industrial and agricultural products, promoting a more balanced trade relationship.
Both sides have agreed to implement this interim framework promptly while continuing negotiations toward a more comprehensive bilateral trade agreement in the coming months.
Modi said the framework will deepen investment and technology partnerships, strengthen resilient and trusted supply chains, and contribute to global economic growth. He framed the agreement as part of India’s broader vision of building a Viksit Bharat — a developed and prosperous nation through future‑oriented global partnerships.
The Prime Minister also reiterated India’s commitment to innovation and shared prosperity, saying the partnership with the United States will empower people and businesses across both countries.
While the interim trade pact has been widely welcomed by industry and business circles, it has also drawn criticism from opposition leaders who argue that certain clauses may favour the U.S. economy over India’s interests. Debates around the long‑term impacts continue as both sides prepare for more detailed negotiations.
Prime Minister Modi’s remarks thanking President Trump for his personal commitment underscore the importance India places on strengthening economic and strategic ties with the United States. The interim trade framework is seen as a significant milestone that could benefit a wide range of sectors, create jobs and boost bilateral cooperation, shaping the future of India‑US relations.
