While Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun using social media to communicate with the country’s youth, he has also launched the “Drug-Free Youth-Developed India Sankalp Abhiyan.” It should be recalled that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has already launched a campaign against drug abuse. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also launched this campaign on Sunday, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his commitment to eradicating drug abuse. Mann said that he would transform Punjab from a “flying” state to a “learned Punjab.” Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini also said that with strong willpower, we have curbed drug abuse in Haryana. The extent of this curbing can only be known if the young generation, known as Gen-Z, becomes committed to these campaigns. We welcome this campaign.
Here’s a shocking statistic about Punjab. Being a border state, Punjab has long been a target of drug traffickers. In 2025, 2,086 kilograms of heroin was seized in Punjab, representing approximately 58 percent of the 3,567 kilograms seized nationwide. This demonstrates that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, in collaboration with the state police force, has launched an active campaign against drug abuse. Now, let’s examine the details of the campaign launched by the central government.
The Prime Minister took a pledge for a drug-free India with the youth. In this campaign, youth were contacted via video conferencing at over 28,000 locations. Spiritual gurus Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Guru Amma, and Dr. Chinmay Pandya also joined virtually. Over 10 million youth participated in this campaign and pledged to abstain from drugs. It has been decided to hold such programs across the country every Sunday for 100 weeks. In this, sports, walkathon, awareness campaign, street play, discussion forum and art competitions will be organised every Sunday. Under community participation programs, the message of a drug-free India will be given by informing people about the ill effects of drugs.
More than 125 organizations will cooperate to make this campaign successful. In Mumbai, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that under this campaign, the Prime Minister will establish communication with the youth of the country and will motivate the youth to stay away from drugs. The Prime Minister gave a very clear message that on one hand the drug mafia earns money by supplying drugs, on the other hand conspiracies are being hatched to destroy our country through this. We will thwart these nefarious activities of the enemies and will help in making the youth of the country healthy physically and mentally by keeping them away from drugs. He said that when a youth falls prey to drugs, a dream, a family is lost, a mother’s smile is snatched away, and a father’s dreams are shattered. This weakens the nation.
We welcome this passionate appeal and this campaign from the Prime Minister. It should be noted that eliminating unemployment and hunger is essential for this campaign to be successful. If Modi launches a campaign for this simultaneously, it will certainly usher in a new era in the country, establishing a direct dialogue between the Gen-Z generation and the Prime Minister. This campaign could be a powerful step in the direction of Modi’s emotional appeals, in which he has called for forgiveness for young people’s inappropriate behavior and awakening their lives
