Mohali Municipal Corporation is set to get a new Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor today. Despite having a clear majority, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has not yet announced the names of its candidates, keeping political circles guessing until the last moment. It is believed that the names will be finalized only after approval from the party high command.

According to Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Singh, a special meeting of the Municipal House will be held at 3 PM on Tuesday.

Newly elected councillors will first be administered the oath of office, following which elections for the posts of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor will be conducted.

MLA’s Son Among Top Contenders for Mayor

Several names are being discussed within the Aam Aadmi Party for the post of Mayor. Among them, the strongest contender is believed to be Sarabjit Singh Samana, councillor and son of Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh.

Another prominent name is Dr. Sunny Ahluwalia, Chairman of the Water Supply and Sewerage Board, who is considered close to the party’s senior leadership. In addition, Gurmeet Kaur, who along with her husband has been elected councillor for a second term, is also seen as a leading candidate in the mayoral race.

Seniority and Representation Likely to Influence Decision

The fourth name in contention is Sukhdev Singh Patwari, who has won municipal elections for the fourth time. Party sources say that factors such as women’s representation, seniority, and regional balance will play a key role in the final decision.

There is also speculation that Punjab’s Industries and Commerce Minister Aman Arora may visit Mohali to officially announce the party’s candidates.

Congress Backs Nipendra Singh Rangi

Meanwhile, the Congress has made its strategy clear ahead of the election. The party has appointed Nipendra Singh Rangi as the leader of the Congress councillor group.

Rangi claimed that all 12 Congress councillors are united and that the party will contest the municipal elections with full strength in the House.

Majority with AAP, But Suspense Continues

AAP enjoys a comfortable majority in the Municipal Corporation, making its victory in the mayoral election almost certain. However, the ongoing discussions within the party regarding the candidate selection have added an element of suspense and excitement to the contest.
