Nagpur: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat appealed for maintaining social unity in his Vijayadashami address in Nagpur on Tuesday. He said that protests and movements are natural in a democracy, but their purpose should be to resolve problems, not to increase divisions and hatred in society.
Bhagwat’s remarks come at a time when protests have erupted across the country over the NEET-UG paper leak and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. The opposition is also demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the SIR issue.
The RSS chief said that it is the responsibility of those involved in the movements, the government, the administration, and political leaders to ensure that protests do not create hostility and division in society.
The aim of movements should be to resolve problems: Bhagwat
Mohan Bhagwat said that problems will persist in society and they will lead to movements. Describing movements as natural in a democracy, he said their aim should be to find solutions.
He said, “Problems will exist. These problems will lead to movements, and movements are inevitable in a democracy. But why should movements happen? Their aim should be to find solutions.”
Bhagwat said that people have the right to express their feelings, but the limits of their behavior and activities are set by the Constitution, the law, and the rules of civilized public conduct. He appealed to all parties to adhere to these limits.
Do not widen divisions in society for political gain
The RSS chief warned against damaging social harmony for electoral gain, cheap popularity, and political gain.
He said that when a movement’s purpose becomes achieving a goal other than solving the underlying problem, it can become a tool of politics.
Bhagwat said, “When a movement is motivated by some other purpose, it becomes a tool of politics. This increases hostility towards an individual, group, or ideology, and forces seeking to weaken India exploit this.”
Referring to Western countries, he alleged that forces seeking to weaken India are adopting various methods to create instability in the country and influence internal developments.
Referring to attempts to change power in other countries, he warned that such forces could also exploit internal differences within India. According to him, mutual tensions and hostility in society could work in the interests of those seeking to weaken the country.
Emphasis on Hindu Sentiment and Social Unity
In his Vijayadashami address, Bhagwat also emphasized the importance of social unity and collective responsibility. This was in line with the RSS’s ideology of focusing on Hindu cultural identity and social solidarity.
He said that society should not depend solely on political leaders or the government to solve its problems. Citizens and communities should also play an active role in addressing local problems.
Bhagwat said, “Problems are not solved only through movements. Solutions emerge from the efforts of society and dialogue within society.”
Citing examples, he cited the efforts made by RSS volunteers to improve schools. According to him, the efforts made in 1,296 schools in 210 districts across 21 states yielded positive results.
He explained that in areas where villagers participated and volunteers worked closely with them, improvements were seen in student attendance, learning levels, and parental involvement in school operations.
Bhagwat said, “The country and society are ours, so it is our responsibility to contribute to their management and functioning.”
Rajiv Chandrashekhar supported Bhagwat’s statement
BJP leader Rajiv Chandrashekhar supported Mohan Bhagwat’s statement, saying that a strong India is not in the interest of its enemies.
The main message of Bhagwat’s address was that protests are not inherently wrong in a democracy, but they should be aimed at solving problems. He appealed to protesters, political leaders, and the administration to take steps that promote dialogue, resolution, and unity rather than fueling hatred and division in society.
