New Delhi: Heavy monsoon rains continued to disrupt several parts of North and Central India, with Uttarakhand reporting 12 rain-related deaths in the past three days. Flood threats have also intensified in Bihar, while heavy rainfall caused fresh damage and waterlogging in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Uttarakhand Sees Heavy Rain, Roads Blocked
Uttarakhand has been witnessing continuous rainfall for the past three days. Twelve people died in separate rain-related incidents on Tuesday. The water level of Naini Lake crossed 88 feet, prompting authorities to open its channels.
As many as 172 roads remain closed across the state. An orange alert has been issued for Nainital, Bageshwar and Dehradun. Schools and anganwadi centres have also been shut in five districts as a precautionary measure.
Bihar Faces Rising Flood Risk
The flood situation in Bihar is becoming more serious, with the Ganga, Punpun and several other rivers flowing above danger levels. Patna received rainfall from Tuesday morning, leading to waterlogging in several areas.
In Bhagalpur, a nearly 100-year-old Durga temple collapsed into the Ganga following severe riverbank erosion.
UP: Deaths, Flooding and Expressway Damage
In Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur, two people were killed after a wall collapsed amid heavy rain. In Ghazipur, two minors were swept away while bathing in the Ganga.
Meanwhile, a nearly 7-foot-deep crater appeared on the Ganga Expressway in Unnao after heavy rainfall. This is reportedly the second such incident on the expressway this monsoon. In Ballia, around 20,000 people have been affected by flooding.
MP’s Chitrakoot Under Water
A strong monsoon system remains active over eastern Madhya Pradesh, bringing heavy rain to Jabalpur, Rewa, Shahdol and Sagar divisions.
In Chitrakoot, the Mandakini River has crossed the danger mark, inundating around 400 shops and 20–25 hotels near Ramghat.
Authorities in Satna have ordered the closure of schools, colleges and anganwadi centres on September 2 and 3 in view of the weather conditions.
