Monsoon likely to reach Punjab by June 25; rain alert for 7 districts today

The weather in Punjab and Chandigarh has undergone a change over the past few days. A ‘yellow alert’ has been issued for today (June 6), predicting rain in seven districts and thunderstorms accompanied by rain in three districts. Strong winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 km/h are expected during this period.

Warnings regarding thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and strong winds have been issued for Muktsar, Bathinda, and Mansa. Meanwhile, rainfall is likely in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Rupnagar, and Mohali.

Surendra Pal, Director of the Meteorological Department’s Chandigarh Centre, stated that if the monsoon maintains its current pace and conditions remain favorable, it could enter Punjab between June 20 and June 25. Monsoon rainfall in Punjab this year is expected to be 8 to 10 percent below normal.

He noted that pre-monsoon activities could begin in mid-June, with thunderstorms and rain expected in several districts. Rainfall over the last 24 hours has led to a drop of 2.2 degrees Celsius in the state’s maximum temperature; the temperature has now fallen to 3.4 degrees below normal. The highest temperature, 42 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Bathinda.

10% More Rainfall Than Normal in the First 5 Days of June

An average of 2 mm of rainfall was recorded in the state up to the morning of June 5. During this period, the highest rainfall occurred in SBS Nagar (9.5 mm) and Rupnagar (6.9 mm). An average of 3.1 mm of rainfall was recorded in the state during the first five days of June, which is 10% higher than the normal average of 2.8 mm for this period. The highest rainfall was recorded in SBS Nagar (9.5 mm), Amritsar (8.4 mm), Rupnagar (7 mm), and Mansa (6.2 mm). Conversely, Barnala, Moga, and Pathankot have not received any rainfall so far. Very little rainfall was also recorded in Fazilka (0.3 mm) and Bathinda (0.4 mm). According to the Meteorological Department, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Mansa recorded rainfall significantly above normal (‘large excess’) during this period.
