New Delhi: Delhi Police has registered three FIRs in connection with the opposition’s protest on Wednesday. Delhi Police said on Thursday that more FIRs are being filed in this matter.
These cases involve various sections related to alleged assault on police personnel, obstruction of government work, manhandling, and misbehavior with police personnel.
The names of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have also surfaced in the FIRs registered so far.
This action comes after the Delhi Police stopped INDIA Bloc MPs from proceeding to Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. The opposition MPs were proceeding to protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition alleges irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.
Several opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, were detained during the protest. Rahul Gandhi was taken to the Barakhamba Road Police Station. During this, he was seen trying to open a barricaded gate while police officers were preventing the protesters from proceeding. While being detained, Rahul Gandhi later waved to the media and flashed a victory sign.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also detained and taken to the Chhatrasal Stadium Police Station. She was seen lying on the ground during the police action. She later alleged that force was used against the protesting MPs.
Priyanka Gandhi, while showing a copy of the Constitution from a police vehicle, told reporters, “What is the value of the Constitution in this country? We will give our lives for it. No price is too high for us.”
Claims to continue the fight to save the Constitution and democracy
Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress and the INDIA Bloc will continue to take to the streets, face arrests, and face legal cases to “save” the Constitution and democracy.
In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said, “The Congress Party and the opposition are prepared to take to the streets, face arrests, and face legal action, as often as necessary, to protect the Constitution and democracy.”
He further said, “This nexus between the dictatorial Modi government and the Election Commission has already been exposed. Now is the time for resignations and action. An arrogant regime cannot survive for long in the face of public enthusiasm.”
Rahul Gandhi further stated that the opposition will continue its protests until Gyanesh Kumar resigns.
He said, “We will not stop protesting until Gyanesh Kumar resigns. This is a fight to protect the most sacred thing in the country. Narendra Modi and Amit Shah cannot do anything to stop us.”
FIR also filed regarding Tuesday’s protest
Earlier on Wednesday, Delhi Police filed an FIR against Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other INDIA Bloc MPs for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhawan complex without permission during a protest against the Election Commission on Tuesday.
According to Delhi Police, the INDIA Bloc had planned a march from Parliament House to the Election Commission’s headquarters, Nirvachan Sadan. Police said no official permission was sought or granted for the proposed march.
When protesters were stopped near the Election Commission’s office, several opposition leaders and MPs began a sit-in there. Following this, Rahul Gandhi and other leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, entered the Akashvani Bhawan complex and continued their protest.
According to the police, the protesters were asked to vacate the premises, but they reportedly refused to do so. They stated that they would not leave until a delegation of MPs was allowed to meet with Election Commission officials.
Delhi Police stated that they eventually intervened to maintain law and order and prevent the situation from escalating. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other protesters were escorted out of the complex and detained.
