Union Minister of State and senior BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu is set to appear before the Punjab SC Commission today. He has been summoned over allegations of using a casteist slur against a police officer during the civic body elections held in May. Bittu had been summoned previously as well, but his lawyer had appeared on his behalf; he had sought time to appear in person.
The incident dates back to May 26, when voting for the civic body elections was underway. During this time, the police had detained BJP leader Onkar Singh. Upon receiving this information, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu arrived in Dhuri. An altercation ensued between him and the police, during which he allegedly used a casteist slur against a police officer.
Bittu publicly apologized
A video of the incident went viral on social media. Taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, the Punjab SC Commission summoned Bittu and sought a report from the Sangrur police. Bittu subsequently issued a public apology for his remarks, and the Sangrur police submitted their report.
Sought time after speaking to the Chairman over the phone
Bittu had been ordered to appear on June 4, 2026. However, he did not appear in person due to personal reasons and urgent engagements in Delhi; instead, his lawyer appeared on his behalf. The lawyer facilitated a conversation between Bittu and the Commission’s Chairman, Jasbir Singh Garhi, explaining Bittu’s engagements and requesting a new date for the hearing. Consequently, he was summoned again for June 15, 2026.
