Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh: The Madhya Pradesh government has initiated a mass anti-rabies vaccination drive after a shocking incident in Chhindwara district, where several people consumed ‘chhas’ (buttermilk) prepared from the milk of a cow suspected to have died of rabies.

According to officials, the incident occurred during a wedding function where the dairy product was served to guests. Later, it was discovered that the milk used to prepare the buttermilk came from a cow that had shown abnormal behavior and was suspected of being infected after a dog bite.

Following the revelation, panic spread among villagers and health authorities immediately swung into action. Medical teams were deployed in the affected area, and anti-rabies vaccinations were administered to all individuals who had consumed the milk-based drink.

Health officials stated that nearly hundreds of people were identified and vaccinated as a precautionary measure, even though experts clarified that rabies transmission through processed milk is extremely unlikely. However, due to the seriousness of exposure concerns, preventive treatment was carried out.

Veterinary and health departments are jointly investigating the case to confirm whether the cow was indeed rabid. Authorities have also urged the public not to panic and to rely on verified medical guidance.

The incident has raised awareness about handling milk from animals suspected of infectious diseases and the importance of timely veterinary reporting in rural areas.
