Building Collapses in Mankhurd Amid Heavy Downpour
The incident occurred around 8.30 p.m. at Chawl No. 5 in Janta Nagar, behind Hanuman Mandir in Mankhurd, after continuous heavy rainfall weakened part of the structure. Preliminary information suggests that two to three tenements of the building gave way, trapping several residents under the rubble.
According to civic officials, six people lost their lives in the collapse, while one person sustained injuries and was shifted to hospital for treatment. Rescue personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), police, NDRF and ambulance services were deployed at the site.
Rescue Operations Continue
Emergency teams used heavy equipment and manual search efforts to clear the debris despite challenging weather conditions. Authorities said at least one more person was feared trapped when rescue operations were underway.
Officials said the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, though relentless monsoon rains are believed to have contributed to the structural failure. An investigation has been initiated, and nearby buildings are being assessed for safety.
The incident comes as Mumbai continues to witness intense rainfall, leading to flooding, transport disruptions and multiple rain-related accidents across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts, urging residents to remain cautious.
