Mumbai Coastal Road Crash: Driver Was Driving Rashly, Case Registered Under Motor Vehicles Act

Mumbai: The driver of the high-end car involved in the fatal Mumbai Coastal Road accident was allegedly driving in a rash and negligent manner, resulting in the deaths of three occupants, including the driver himself, while another passenger sustained grievous injuries, police said on Monday.

An FIR was registered earlier in the day at Tardeo Police Station in connection with the crash, which took place between around 5 a.m. and 5:20 a.m. on Sunday.

Car Plunged From Coastal Road Flyover

According to the FIR, a black high-end car travelling northbound from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali allegedly lost control while being driven at high speed near Lotus Jetty.

The car reportedly crashed through a barrier and plunged from the flyover into an under-construction area below. The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicle.

The four occupants were identified as Shanay Gujjar, 21, Dhairya Darshan Seth, 17, Aditya Jakasania, around 18–19, and Aditya Kalpeshwar Oswal, in his early 20s.

Three Declared Brought Dead

Police said Gujjar was found in the driver’s seat after the crash. The FIR alleges that he was driving rashly and negligently, resulting in the deaths of himself, Seth and Jakasania, who were seated in the rear of the vehicle.

The fourth occupant, Oswal, sustained grievous injuries and was taken to Nair Hospital for treatment along with the other occupants.

Gujjar, Seth and Jakasania were declared brought dead at the hospital, while Oswal continues to receive treatment and remains in critical condition.

FIR Registered Under Motor Vehicles Act

During the investigation, police recovered four mobile phones from the accident site, including three iPhones and one OnePlus phone. A Coach New York wallet containing a Rs 100 note and Jakasania’s Aadhaar card was also recovered.

Police have registered offences under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act along with relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to rash driving and causing death by negligence.

Further investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.
