Mumbai: Nair Hospital in Mumbai was placed on high alert late Saturday after its dean received a threatening email claiming a bomb had been planted at the facility. The message, sent to the dean’s official email around 11 p.m., prompted immediate concern and action.
Hospital authorities quickly informed Mumbai Police, who arrived with security teams to carry out a detailed search of the premises. No suspicious items or explosives were found.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the search, police launched an investigation to track down the source of the email and identify the sender. Authorities are pursuing multiple leads while stepping up patrols and surveillance in and around the hospital.
Officials have also urged citizens to stay vigilant and report any unusual activity.
Recent Threats Raise Security Concerns in Mumbai
The incident comes amid heightened security in the city. Just two days earlier, Mumbai Airport received a similar threat via email.
On Thursday, another alarming message surfaced on WhatsApp, claiming that 14 terrorists had entered Mumbai with 400 kg of RDX in 34 vehicles. The message, naming an outfit called Lashkar-e-Jihadi, raised an alert ahead of the large-scale Anant Chaturthi celebrations.
Noida Man Arrested in Connection with Terror Hoax
Investigations into Thursday’s threat traced its origin to Noida, where police arrested Ashwani Kumar from his home. According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Sumit Shukla, Kumar was handed over to Mumbai Police.
Police found that Kumar, who calls himself an astrologer and Vastu consultant, had allegedly sent the threat using the name of his former friend, Firoz — the same person who filed a case against him in Patna in 2023, resulting in a three-month jail term.
The email was reportedly an attempt to frame Firoz and settle personal scores. Several mobile phones, SIM cards, and digital devices were seized from Kumar.
Security Measures Intensified
Mumbai Police have registered a case at Worli police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Authorities have reiterated their appeal to the public not to spread or believe in rumours, assuring that security has been further tightened across the city.
