Mumbai judge loses Rs 93,000 in fake app cyber scam

Mumbai: A judge in Mumbai fell victim to cyber fraud when fraudsters posing as customer care representatives defrauded him of approximately Rs 93,000.

After experiencing technical problems with his phone, the judge contacted a number he received online and was then connected to a fake customer support executive.

Losses due to APK downloads and small payments
The accused sent an APK file on WhatsApp and asked him to download it. A registration fee of ₹20 was also paid through Google Pay.

Upon installing the file, the fraudster gained access to his phone and banking details, after which Rs 93,000 was withdrawn from his SBI account in two transactions.

Case registered, investigation ongoing
Upon realizing what had happened, the victim contacted the police. Mumbai Police have registered a case against an unknown accused at the Tardeo police station and have begun investigation.

The police are also actively investigating other similar cyber fraud cases.
