Tensions flare in Mumbai’s Mazgaon after eggs thrown at Ganpati procession

Mumbai: Tensions erupted in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area after eggs were allegedly thrown during the arrival of a Ganpati procession, leading to clashes between two groups, officials said on Monday.

The incident took place on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, following which security was heightened in the area.

According to locals, eggs were allegedly thrown at the procession from a nearby building by unidentified persons. Following the incident, a large crowd gathered at the spot and chanted slogans such as ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Vande Mataram’, leading to a clash between two groups.

Police intervene, situation brought under control

Police intervened after the situation escalated and brought the situation under control. Locals demanded the arrest of those responsible for allegedly throwing eggs at the procession.

They claimed that the incident was not isolated and that a similar incident had taken place a few years ago in Byculla’s Nagpada area.

“The incident that took place here today is condemnable. The arrival of Lord Ganpati had already happened, and someone from nearby buildings threw ‘Baida’ (egg in Marathi). After the incident, tension escalated here,” Akhil Public Festival Committee President Hitesh Jadhav told reporters on Monday morning.

“We have requested that the police take action within the next 24 hours. Maharashtra’s Minister for Cultural Affairs, Ashish Shelar, has helped us a lot… We have been assured that complete action will be taken on this within 24 hours,” he added.

Security tightened in Mazgaon

Police personnel continue to be deployed in the area to maintain law and order. However, no official statement has been issued by the police so far.

The incident is similar to one reported in Nagpada’s Kamathipura area in August 2022, when eggs were allegedly hurled at a procession carrying a Ganesh idol, triggering a clash between two groups that was later brought under control.

According to the police, the accused in the 2022 incident was immediately arrested and an FIR was registered against him under Sections 153A and 295A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The accused was later remanded to police custody, police had said.
