Mumbai Muharram Poisoning Conspiracy: 30,000 Poison Capsules Seized, Accused Planned Major Attack

Mumbai: New revelations have emerged during the investigation into the alleged conspiracy to poison the Muharram procession in Mumbai. According to police, 39-year-old Fayaz Premji stayed in a budget hotel in Dongri for about two weeks and prepared thousands of poisonous capsules.

Investigations have revealed that the accused ordered approximately 30,000 empty capsules and approximately 50 kilograms of zinc phosphide through an online platform. Zinc phosphide is a highly toxic chemical commonly used to kill rats. Police claim that he prepared these capsules in his hotel room.

14,900 Poison Capsules Found in Hotel

During a search of the hotel, police recovered 14,900 capsules allegedly filled with zinc phosphide. Investigating agencies believe the accused’s goal was to produce a total of 30,000 capsules.

According to police, during interrogation, the accused reportedly stated that he intended to distribute these capsules during the Muharram procession, claiming they were painkillers. The recovered chemicals and other materials have been sent for forensic examination.

The matter came to light after people’s health deteriorated

The case came to light when some participants in the Muharram procession allegedly consumed the capsules, mistaking them for painkillers. They subsequently suffered vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain. Doctors alerted the police, prompting an investigation.

During the investigation, police tracked the accused and arrested him. Officials say timely action averted a major incident.

Foreign contacts and personal life also investigated

The investigation has now also expanded to the accused’s possible foreign contacts. Police have found phone numbers linked to Iran and Iraq on his mobile phone, which are being investigated. However, no foreign conspiracy has been confirmed so far.

The investigation team also questioned the accused’s family in Pune. The family stated that they had not had any contact with him for a long time. Police are also investigating the accused’s personal life. Preliminary investigations have revealed that he suffered from depression after his wife separated from him about two years ago. However, police have clarified that this aspect has not yet been confirmed and the investigation is ongoing.

A case has been registered against the accused under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including attempt to murder and poisoning. Investigating agencies are also examining his bank transactions, digital devices, online purchases, travel records, and call details to determine whether he alone hatched this alleged conspiracy or whether anyone else was involved.
