Mumbai Police busts mass poisoning plan during Muharram, seizes 14,900 poison capsule; 1 arrested

New Delhi: Mumbai Police on Saturday claimed to have averted a major tragedy by foiling an alleged plot to target people participating in a Muharram procession in the city. Police said one person has been arrested for allegedly planning to distribute capsules containing zinc phosphide, a highly toxic substance, among devotees attending the religious event.

According to officials, timely intervention by the police prevented the alleged distribution of nearly 15,000 poison-filled capsules, potentially saving thousands of lives.

Nearly 15,000 Capsules Recovered

Addressing the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Region, Zone 1) Jayant Meena said the accused was apprehended after police received information during the Muharram procession that an individual was distributing what appeared to be medicine among participants.

Acting swiftly on the tip-off, police intercepted the suspect and recovered Aadhaar and passport documents from his possession. A subsequent search led to the seizure of approximately 14,900 capsules allegedly filled with zinc phosphide.

Investigators stated that the capsules had not yet been distributed, allowing police to stop the alleged plan before it could be carried out.

One Person Fell Ill

Police said the investigation intensified after one individual, identified as Salman Saiyed, reportedly fell ill after consuming one of the capsules. The incident prompted authorities to trace the source of the capsules and identify the alleged distributor.

Officials said the quick response of the police prevented what could have been a mass casualty incident during the religious procession, which had drawn a large gathering.

Accused Identified as Pune Resident

The arrested accused has been identified as Faiyaz Premji, a resident of Viman Nagar in Pune. According to police, he holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree and runs a paint business.

Investigators revealed that the accused had rented accommodation in Mumbai’s Dongri area around 15 days ago. During the investigation, police also found that he had travelled to Iran and Iraq in 2025. The purpose of these foreign visits is currently being verified as part of the ongoing probe.

Investigation Underway

Police further alleged that the accused had ordered nearly 50 kilograms of zinc phosphide and intended to fill capsules with approximately one gram of the poison each. According to investigators, the alleged plan was to distribute the capsules among people participating in the Muharram procession, where nearly 30,000 devotees had gathered.

Authorities are now examining the suspect’s motive, possible associates, and whether he acted alone or was part of a larger conspiracy. Forensic examination of the seized capsules is also underway.

Mumbai Police said the investigation remains in progress, and additional details will be shared as more evidence emerges. Security has been heightened, and officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity to law enforcement agencies.
