Bengal Police Recover Arms, 186 Bullets From Trinamool Leader’s Residence In Murshidabad

Kolkata: West Bengal Police recovered a large cache of firearms and ammunition from the residence of a local Trinamool Congress leader in Murshidabad district on Saturday, officials said.

The recovery was made from the residence of Papai Ghosh, the Baharampur town president of the Trinamool Congress Youth Wing, following his questioning in police custody.

Seven Firearms, 186 Bullets Recovered

Police said Ghosh had earlier faced several cases during the previous Mamata Banerjee-led government, including a marauder charge in 2017.

According to officials, Ghosh had been absconding after the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections, in which the Trinamool Congress suffered a major defeat.

Earlier this month, Ghosh surrendered before a district court in Murshidabad. Police subsequently arrested him on August 14.

During questioning in police custody, he allegedly disclosed the location of a cache of arms and ammunition at his residence. Acting on the information, police conducted a raid and recovered the weapons.

The seizure included seven firearms, five magazines and 186 rounds of ammunition.

The firearms comprised two 9 mm pistols, three 7.65 mm pistols and two single-shot pipe guns, police said.

Two More Arrested With Firearms

In a separate operation in Murshidabad on Saturday, police from Saktipur Police Station arrested two people allegedly carrying firearms and ammunition.

The accused were identified as Jabbar Mondal and Alamgir Sheikh.

Police recovered three firearms, six magazines and 40 rounds of ammunition from their possession.

The two men are being questioned to establish why they were carrying the weapons and identify the intended recipients of the ammunition, officials said.

Police Intensify Arms Crackdown

The latest seizures come amid intensified police action against illegal arms in several parts of West Bengal.

Officials have particularly focused on sensitive areas including Malda, Murshidabad and other districts along the India-Bangladesh border.

The recovered weapons and ammunition are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation, while police are also probing whether the two separate seizures are connected.
