Nankana Sahib Yatra cancelled on Guru Nanak Jayanti: Centre denies permission due to security reasons

The Central Government has denied permission for the proposed pilgrimage to Nankana Sahib (Pakistan) on the occasion of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary in November this year. The Ministry of Home Affairs, citing security reasons, has written to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), stating that the pilgrimage is not feasible under the current circumstances.

In its letter, the Ministry highlighted the tense situation along the India-Pakistan border, noting that the security risks for pilgrims could increase during the journey. The Ministry clarified that sending pilgrims to the neighboring country at this time would not be appropriate.

SGPC Protests Decision

SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami opposed the Central Government’s decision, stating, “This is an insult to the religious sentiments of Sikhs. If India and Pakistan can maintain relations for cricket matches, why are devotees being denied permission to visit their holy sites?”

Previous Permissions Granted

According to the SGPC, Sikh pilgrims have previously been allowed to travel to Pakistan under special arrangements. For Guru Nanak Ji’s 550th birth anniversary, special events were organized in Pakistan, in which Indian devotees wished to participate

Appeal for Reconsideration

The SGPC has appealed to the Central Government to reconsider its decision and allow Sikh devotees to participate in the events organized in Pakistan. The committee emphasized that the government should respect religious sentiments.
