Nation Terrorized by the Monster of Inflation

The conflict currently unfolding in West Asia— specifically the war involving Israel and the US against Iran, which has been ongoing for the past three months—has reached a critical impasse regarding energy supply routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz.

On one hand, Iran has imposed a blockade and is now contemplating extending this blockade to the Red Sea; on the other, the US, positioned in the Gulf of Oman, is offering its protective cover to the container ships and cargo vessels currently stranded there. However, this assurance of safety does little to instill a sense of security among the various nations whose containers—laden with crude oil or natural gas— remain trapped in the region. Supply chains are in disarray, and global crude oil prices have skyrocketed. Cooking fuel—cylinders of which are utilized across the service sector, ranging from hotels and restaurants to the humble street-side food stalls of the impoverished—is witnessing price hikes.

These increases are being granted by the government as a “gift” to petroleum companies, intended to shield them from financial losses. Once again, the price of commercial LPG cylinders has risen—this time by Rs 42, effective Monday. In Delhi, the price of a commercial LPG cylinder has climbed from Rs 3,071.50 to Rs 3,113.50. Prior to this, a massive hike of Rs 993 had already been implemented in its price as recently as May 1st. Commercial LPG prices have now reached record-high levels. It is evident that this latest increase of Rs 42 will have a widespread impact on inflation across the country. It is not merely those who cook who will have to bear this burden; every other enterprise linked to the food service industry will also feel the brunt of this impact
