Imphal: Manipur Police have apprehended 14 militants from various banned outfits and seized arms, ammunition, cash, and incriminating documents over the past 24 hours, officials reported on Wednesday.
A senior police officer noted that the arrests took place across six districts: Thoubal, Imphal East, Imphal West, Tengnoupal, Bishnupur, and Jiribam. Four militants were arrested in both Imphal East and Thoubal, while three were taken into custody in Tengnoupal, with one each from Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Jiribam.
The detained individuals were affiliated with the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), United National Liberation Front (UNLF), PREPAK, and Socialist Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (SOREPA). They are believed to be involved in various criminal activities, including extorting money from government employees, contractors, traders, and ordinary citizens in different districts.
According to the police, the seized items include pistols, high-powered grenades, mobile phones, one car, multiple two-wheelers, and various incriminating documents. Notably, Rs 21.50 lakh was confiscated from one of the UNLF militants arrested in Bishnupur district.
Security forces conducted search operations and area domination in sensitive and vulnerable regions of the hill and valley districts. During these operations, temporary shelters used for a training camp for Village Volunteers were dismantled at Gelmol village in Churachandpur District.
In a related development, a Defence spokesperson announced that in a series of joint operations over the past week, the Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF, BSF, ITBP, and Manipur Police recovered a total of 77 illegally-held arms, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades, and various types of ammunition and war supplies from seven districts: Churachandpur, Bishnupur, Imphal East, Kakching, Jiribam, Kangpokpi, and Imphal West.
The recovered weapons included carbines, self-loading rifles (SLRs), AK series rifles, .303 Light Machine Guns (LMGs), carbine machine guns, INSAS rifles, sniper rifles, double-barreled rifles, bolt action rifles, and pistols. Additionally, security forces arrested nine more militants from different outfits during these operations.
