New Delhi: Chief Minister Atishi of Delhi has leveled serious accusations against the BJP-led Haryana government, claiming it has been discharging contaminated water into the Yamuna River, which she believes is a deliberate move to disrupt the capital’s water supply.
During a press conference, Atishi highlighted that three water treatment plants in Delhi are nearing closure due to the inflow of heavily polluted water from the Wazirabad barrage, directly blaming the BJP for the situation.
Atishi criticized the BJP, suggesting that the party is anticipating a significant loss in the upcoming 2025 Assembly elections, and resorting to what she termed as an “abominable and despicable act” to deny residents access to clean water.
“There are eight water treatment plants in Delhi, all sourcing water from the Yamuna River. The Wazirabad, Chandrawal, and Okhla plants depend on water from the Wazirabad barrage. The Haryana government, in a bid to render the water treatment facilities dysfunctional, has begun discharging industrial waste into the river,” she asserted.
She noted that pollution has escalated to a point where these three plants are on the verge of shutting down. Specifically, she mentioned a drain (DD8) near Pyaau Manihari, alleging it has been releasing water with high ammonia levels into the Yamuna.
Atishi provided alarming data on ammonia levels, stating, “The typical ammonia levels in water are around 1-2 ppm. As elections approach, we’ve seen a sharp increase: it was 3.3 ppm on January 14, 4.6 ppm on January 18, 6.4 ppm on January 24, and 7.2 ppm on January 26.”
She condemned the situation, describing the water released by the BJP government as toxic and part of a plot to undermine Delhi’s water supply due to fears of their electoral defeat. This pollution is expected to impact various areas in Delhi, including Karol Bagh, Jhnadewala, Patel Nagar, Wazirpur, Punjabi Bagh, Model Town, Kingsway Camp, Kalkaji, Batla House, and Kalindi Kunj.
Atishi also stated that her party plans to approach the Election Commission regarding the BJP’s alleged attempts to influence the elections by disrupting Delhi’s water supply.
The Chief Minister’s direct accusations against the BJP and the Haryana government are likely to provoke strong responses and counterclaims from them.
