New Delhi: Atishi, the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly and a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alleged on Thursday that police have been instructed to prevent AAP MLAs from entering the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, acting under orders from the Speaker.

Atishi stated that this sort of barring is unprecedented in India’s parliamentary history. She explained that police officers informed the AAP MLAs that they were prohibited from accessing the Assembly premises due to a directive from the Speaker and that this ban, which lasts for three days, has never been seen before in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha or Parliament.

She raised concerns over the justification for deploying police to enforce this directive, emphasizing that typically, if an MLA is suspended, their access is restricted only within the assembly, not far from the gate. Atishi expressed her determination to continue addressing this issue, saying, “We are waiting and will fight back.”

In response, BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay supported the Speaker’s decision, asserting that the assembly must operate by law and that the Speaker’s decisions are final if opposition members disrupt proceedings. Similarly, MLA Ravindra Singh Negi advised the opposition to respect the Constitution, reminding them that they are no longer in power. Delhi Minister Parvevsh Verma added that AAP MLAs must not disrupt the House during the Lieutenant Governor’s address, stating that breaking such rules is unacceptable.

This incident arises in the context of increased tensions between the AAP-led Delhi government and the office of the Assembly Speaker. On Tuesday, Speaker Vijender Gupta suspended 12 AAP MLAs, including Atishi and Gopal Rai, amid chaotic scenes in the Assembly prior to the presentation of the CAG report.
