New Delhi: Celebrated actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar passed away on Friday at the age of 87 at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. He had been unwell for some time and was admitted to the hospital on February 21 due to worsening health conditions.
In a social media post, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the loss of the legendary actor and filmmaker, stating that he was deeply saddened by Kumar’s passing.
On X, PM Modi wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, known for his patriotic spirit, which was vividly reflected in his films.”
The Prime Minister added that Kumar’s works ignited a spirit of national pride that will continue to inspire future generations. “My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” he said, also sharing photos from past meetings with the veteran actor.
Manoj Kumar, who received the Padma Shri in 1992 for his contributions to Bollywood, further solidified his legacy by being honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. He was affectionately known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic films.
He made a significant impact with classics such as Shaheed, Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, Kranti, Upkar, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, among many others, which are regarded as exceptional works in Indian cinema.
Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab, Manoj Kumar carved out a distinguished career in Bollywood. Along with the Padma Shri and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, he earned several other prestigious accolades, including a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards in various categories.
