The government launched the Agneepath scheme in 2022. Under this, young people are recruited on contract for four years in the Army, Navy and Air Force. 4 years also include six months of training. After four years, Agniveers will be rated on the basis of their efficiency. On the basis of this merit, 25% of the Agniveers will be taken into permanent service. The rest will return to the civil world.

Soldiers below the officer rank will be recruited in this scheme. That is, their rank will be as Personal Below Officer Rank i.e. PBOR. The rank of these soldiers will be different from the appointment of Commissioned Officer and Non-Commissioned Officer in the army. Recruitment will be done through rally twice a year.
