Amendment in rules of oath-taking for newly elected MPs, can’t add extra words, slogan during oath

As per the new amendment, the MP taking oath has to adhere by the set format of the oath.

New Delhi: In view of recent activities during the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected MPs, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla has made a new amendment in the rules of Oath taking. Earlier, slogan of ‘Jai Palestine’ by MP Asadudin Owaisi drew criticism from all over. Other MPs too while taking the oath hailed different types of solgans.

To put a stop on such activities, an amendment has been made by the speaker Om Birla. As per the new amendment, the MP taking oath has to adhere by the set format of the oath.

The notification of the amendment read, “In pursuance of Rule 389 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha (Seventeenth Edition), the Speaker has made the following amendment to the Directions”.

“A Member shall make and subscribe oath or affirmation, as the case may be, in accordance with the form set out for the purpose, in the Third Schedule to the Constitution of India and shall not use any word or expression or make any remark as a prefix or suffix to the form of oath or affirmation.” The recent amendment will bar the members to add any extra word, slogan in the set format of the oath.
