Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in West Bengal late on Saturday night to inaugurate the party’s ‘Sadasyata Abhiyan’ membership drive. He was greeted by BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanta Majumdar. BJP leader Agnimitra Paul announced that Shah would formally launch the nationwide membership drive in Kolkata on Sunday, October 27.
Paul criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing the fatalities from Cyclone Dana, noting that while four people died in West Bengal, Odisha had no casualties despite being affected. Paul accused Banerjee of failing to fulfill her promise to transform the state, likening it to a deterioration rather than improvement.
BJP leader Rahul Sinha also condemned the TMC government, alleging that they obstruct relief funds from reaching those in need and accusing Banerjee of inciting riots. He claimed the TMC benefits from natural disasters by seeking central funds that do not reach the citizens.
BJP leader Locket Chatterjee explained that the membership drive had a delayed start in West Bengal due to political circumstances, while reporting that over 10 crore people nationwide have already joined the party.
In addition to launching the membership initiative, Amit Shah will also inaugurate the newly built Passenger Terminal and Maitri Dwar at the Land Port in Petrapole on Sunday. This Land Port is the largest in South Asia and serves as a key trade and travel route between India and Bangladesh, facilitating about 70% of the land-based trade between the two countries and managing over 23.5 lakh passenger movements each year.
Maitri Dwar is a new cargo gate established to enhance cross-border traffic efficiency and was initially inaugurated by Shah on May 9, 2023. This joint cargo gate addresses the daily flow of approximately 600-700 trucks through the Petrapole-Benapole border crossing.
