  • New Delhi, July 28: A day before a crucial debate in Parliament on Operation Sindoor and the recent Pahalgam terror attack, political tensions escalated as Union Minister and BJP MP Anurag Thakur lashed out at senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram over his controversial remarks on the origin of the attackers.

In an interview earlier this week, former Home Minister Chidambaram questioned the notion that the Pahalgam terrorists came from Pakistan and suggested the possibility of involvement of “homegrown terrorists”. His statement has been sharply criticised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Anurag Thakur calling it a “deliberate attempt to defend Pakistan”.

“Whenever there is talk of Pakistan and terrorism, the Congress party adopts an attitude as if it is defending Pakistan. Even Pakistan does not defend itself as much as the ‘Rahul-occupied Congress’ does,” Thakur said in a scathing statement.

He questioned the Congress party’s repeated stand on such issues, asking:

“What is the compulsion of the Congress to repeatedly defend Pakistan, even at the cost of our own national security?”

Thakur also pointed out the timing of Chidambaram’s comments, calling them “highly irresponsible” as Parliament is preparing for a debate on the Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of several innocent citizens and is being linked to Pakistani terror outfits.

“Chidambaram’s statement is not just insensitive – it exposes the pro-Pakistan mindset that has plagued the Congress leadership for years,” Thakur added.

The BJP has accused the Congress of undermining India’s stand on terrorism and international accountability by casting doubt on the origin of the Pahalgam attackers.
