Gaya: Neeraj Kumar, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Bihar Police, reportedly died by suicide by using his service revolver at the police lines in Gaya district on Thursday morning, according to officials.
Kumar, originally from Shringarpur village in Lakhisarai district, had been assigned to the Mufassil police station in Gaya for the past 18 months. He had returned to duty on Tuesday after taking a 39-day leave and reported to the station’s SHO to request his duty assignment.
Vishwajit Singh, Executive President of the Bihar Police Men’s Association, noted that Kumar was reportedly under significant stress, both personally and professionally.
On Wednesday night, while police personnel were watching an IPL match, they later went to sleep. On Thursday morning, Kumar was found dead on the lawn with a gunshot wound to the temple, and his service revolver was nearby.
The case was promptly reported to senior officials, leading to SSP Anand Kumar visiting the scene and launching an investigation. DSP Dharmendra Bharti announced that a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team had been called in to collect evidence from the location.
“We have informed Kumar’s family, as their insights may help clarify if he was facing personal issues,” Bharti stated.
Sources suggested that Kumar had been dealing with chronic arm pain from volleyball practice, which had reportedly intensified, contributing to his stress.
“The pain may have been a factor in his distress,” said a knowledgeable source.
Police are currently awaiting the FSL report and statements from Kumar’s family to better understand the circumstances of his death. His body has been sent for a post-mortem, which will be conducted in the presence of family members.
