Rewa: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was killed, and several other police officers were seriously injured in an attack by villagers in Mauganj district, Rewa division, Madhya Pradesh. The incident occurred in Gadara village, located about 70 km from Rewa, under the Shahpur police station area. The attackers, who are from the tribal community, also held an administrative official hostage, but the official was safely rescued when additional police forces arrived.

The violence began when local police responded to the alleged kidnapping and killing of a man, Sunny Dube, by a tribal family on Friday night. This led to tensions between locals, which worsened when the police returned to the village on Saturday. The tribals attacked the police team with axes, stones, and other weapons, injuring several officers, including Traffic Inspector Sandeep Bharti and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ankita Sulya. SDPO Sulya was trapped in a room and had to be rescued later that evening when additional police forces arrived.

The incident traces back to the death of a tribal man, Ashok Kumar, in a road accident several months ago. Kumar’s family had accused Sunny Dube of being responsible for his death. On Friday, the tribals kidnapped Dube and confined him, and by Saturday, he was found dead.

This attack has sparked political controversy, with the Opposition Congress criticizing the law and order situation in Madhya Pradesh. State Congress President Jitu Patwari condemned the violence, calling the situation worse than “jungle-raj” and stating that even the police are not safe.
