Guwahati (Assam): The Assam Cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved the expansion of Kaziranga National Park by over 47,000 hectares as part of its sixth extension. This move aims to bolster biodiversity conservation and encourage sustainable tourism at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The expanded area includes villages such as Gopal Jarani, Gonaitapu, Jobre, Thute Chapori, Baligaon Biswanath Ghat, Umatamoni, Gakhirkhaite, Silghat, and Hatimura, as announced by the Assam Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) via an X post. This decision was finalized during a state cabinet meeting held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati on May 21.
In addition, the Assam Cabinet approved issuing arms licenses to indigenous residents living in vulnerable, remote, and border regions to enhance their security, viewing it as a deterrent against unlawful threats and a way to boost personal safety and confidence.
The cabinet also approved a Rs 250 crore plan to upgrade 34 polytechnics and 43 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) into Centers of Excellence in partnership with Tata Technologies Limited, aiming to strengthen skill development and employment prospects.
Furthermore, the government sanctioned renaming three key institutions: Sarusajai Sports Complex will now be called Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, Mangaldoi Stadium will be renamed Raja Dharma Narayan Stadium, and the State Institute of Panchayat and Rural Development will be called Golap Borbora State Institute of Panchayat and Rural Development, to honor notable Assam figures.
Finally, the cabinet approved land allotments by Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) for Greenko Energies’ 900 MW off-stream Pumped Storage Project in West Karbi Anglong, along with relaxations in land use policies for oil palm cultivation under the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO-OP), facilitating greater benefits for farmers.
