Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma firmly denied any reports that a Bangladeshi student was enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati. He stated that a comprehensive investigation was carried out, confirming that no such student has been admitted.
Sarma’s comments came after a post on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that a student from Bangladesh had enrolled at IIT Guwahati. The original post was later deleted, but the account posted a follow-up accusing certain accounts of using fake identities and images of Hindus with Muslim names to spread misinformation. The follow-up post clarified that the individual in the image was a Hindu named Chandan Dey.

The Chief Minister emphasized, “We have conducted a thorough inquiry and can confirm that there is no Bangladeshi student at IIT Guwahati. IIT Guwahati is a highly responsible and internationally respected institution.” He urged people to depend on verified facts instead of assumptions and reiterated that Assam would never be a safe haven for anti-India activities.
Additionally, Sarma expressed concern over misinformation campaigns, highlighting that some accounts are using fake identities and photos to spread falsehoods. He appreciated the efforts of the Assam government in actively working to identify and counter Bangladeshi infiltrators.
Earlier, on May 2, Sarma criticized Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his family, claiming that his children are not Indian citizens. Speaking to the media, Sarma alleged that Gogoi’s son and daughter are not Indian citizens and accused Gaurav Gogoi of visiting Pakistan for 15 days, which he described as a terrorist hideout rather than a tourist destination. Sarma also pointed out that figures like Robert Vadra and Gaurav Gogoi appear more concerned about Pakistan than India.
